To enter the country and drive in Croatia you will need an insurance green card, a valid driving licence and a car registration card.

During the summer months the traffic on border crossings is of higher intensity –which may lead to shorter traffic jams.

The highway A1 Zagreb-Split, since being finished in 2005, supplemnets and connects the two vital European road routes (E 59) Maribor-Zagreb-Split and (E 65) Rijeka-Split-Dubrovnik.

The toll charged on the motorways, semi-motorways and bridges depends of the category of the vehicle and of the section and route of the road. The toll can be paid in cash as well as by Credit Cards (American Express, Diners, Master Card, Maestro, Visa) and in foreign currencies (according to the exchange rate list of PBZ – Privredna Banka Zagreb on the day of the payment).

Most gas stations are open from 7 am until 8 pm, some even 24 hours a day. A lead-free petrol, marked with green indication is sold in all of the gas stations.

Traffic rules in Croatia are: cars drive on the right side of the road. If the traffic signs do not indicate different, the speed limits are as follows: speed limit on the motorways and semi-motorways is 130 km per hour, the limit on a road with double lanes is 100 km per hour, the speed limit in non residential areas is 80 km per hour and in the residential areas, cities, towns and villages the limit is at 50 km per hour. The amount of traffic fine depends of the traffic violation.

The permitted alcohol level for the driver in Croatia is 0,05‰.

Croatian Radio (Hrvatski Radio) provides regular Road information in several languages in regular intervals during the day.

All accidents must be reported to the police (Policija) immediately at tel. number 192.

Rent-a-car service conditions: the driver must be older than 23 and in possession of a valid driving licence. Most international rent-a-car agencies have offices in bigger cities, at airports and in tourist areas.
