island Mljet

The island of Mljet is the largest island in the Dubrovnik archipelago as well as, the most beautiful and the most forested island of the Adriatic. It was named the “green island” because of its rich Mediterranean vegetation. 70% of the island’s surface is covered with forests. The first inhabitants on the island were the Illyrians, who came to the island 4000 years ago. Mljet is 37km long, 3km wide, and covers the area of 100,4km2. Babino Polje (district center), Goveđari, Korita, Kozarica, Prožurska Luka, Njivice, Okuklje, Polače, Prožura, Ropa, Saplunara, Maranovići, Soline, Pomena, Sobra, Tatinica i Velika Loza, Babine Kuće, Blato, Korita, Pristanište are some of the settlements on the island. Babino Polje is one of the oldest and biggest villages on the island. It is located beneath the hill Veliki I Mali grad.

The Mljet national park is situated on the island, one of the oldest national parks on the Adriatic. The land area was declared a national park in 1960, while the sea part was subjoined in 1997. This area was declared a national park because of its rich flora and fauna, sweet-salty lakes, cultural and historical heritage, as well as because of its astonishing indented coast with numerous cliffs and islets.

The most interesting attraction on the island of Mljet is the Ulysses cave (Odisejeva spilja) located near Babino Polje. It is famous because, allegedly, Ulysees spent 7 years in that cave, watching the open sea while mourning for his beloved wife and home.
