Tourist destination info Fazana

Fažana is located in the southwestern part of the western coast of Istria in the Fažana channel. It is the starting port when traveling to the Brijuni Islands - a National Park with attributes of heaven. Fažana is also called the pearl of the west coast of the largest Croatian peninsula. The local population has always been fishing and farming. It has also been a meeting place and a battle ground of great nations, such as the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and military and civilian authorities of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The first time Josip Broz Tito (a revolutionary and a former president of Yugoslavia) visited the Briuni archipelago he departed from Fažana. The charm of this old town is created by old squares and houses lined next to each other. Visit the parish church of St. Cosmas and Damian,  located in the old center of the town, the church of St. Mary of Mount Carmel, the church of St. Elisha, St. John’s church and many other cultural monuments depicting the heritage of Fažana.

In the port and on the promenade there are many summer festivities, the oldest and most famous of which is the “Party of Mackerel” (fish case carrying contests, rope tugs, rowing, etc.), as well as the “Fažanski tanac” (a festival of young folklore dancers from Istria), “Sea on the Table” (a seafood festivity where you can taste differed seafood specialties), “Zvizde, sviće I ferali”(a festivity in which Fažana gives its jewels to the sea, complete with the music of street players and soloists), as well as many others. The beaches in Fažana are covered mainly with pebbles and concrete and the city also has a “Children’s beach” which has shallow access to the sea. The touristic offer of Fažana is made complete by the sports activities in nearby camps, excursions to the Brijuni islands and the islands Kozadu and Jerolim, while gastronomy remains one of Fažana’s strongest characteristics. Those who wish to taste Istrian cuisine should visit the following restaurants: “Mala Vala,” “Surida,” “Adria,” “Batana” and “Margerita.” Fažana does not have a lot to offer to those in search of a night life, but Pula, Medulin and Premantura are good stand ins.

Must see places:

Premantura is a settlement located on the South of Istria on a slightly elevated point of Cape Kamenjak. It is one of the few destinations that has a beach specially designed for the blind.

Pula is a city rich in history and cultural monuments. The city is dominated by the 6th largest ancient amphitheater in the world. Apart from the amphitheater, Pula has many other historical monuments such as Augustus’ temple, triumphal arch of the Segijans, the Forum, the gates of Hercules, church and monastery of St. Frances, castle, navy cemetery and many others. The city offers a wide variety of sports and recreational activities as well. You can take part in windsurfing, basketball, tennis, sailing, panoramic flights, nature climbing, golf, scuba diving, walking and cycling.

Medulin is a city with a richly developed long coastline. Once a fisherman’s village, it is now a modern tourist destination. This city lives from tourism and offers a dynamic and rich vacation. Sports and recreation lovers can take part in scuba diving, soccer, cycling, golf, tennis, horseback riding, sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. It has some of the most beautiful pebble, sand and rocky beaches in Istria.

    Lovely location
Fazana has everything we needed. We didn''t hire a car and cycled everywhere along the beautiful coast. We felt very safe and enjoyed the relaxed ambience. Food prices were a lot higher than expected so next time we will eat out less and shop at Lidls. I paid 60kuna for some tomatoes, strawberries and spring onions which I felt was slightly ripping off tourists! But this didn''t put us off and we are going back. If there is anywhere in the world we would choose to live in when we retire it would be Istria!

Fazana is an ideal place for people who would like to flee overcrowded resorts, yet don''t like complete wilderness, either. Small as it is, the town has nice restaurants, cafes and pubs on the main square and in the marina area, as well as a lovely promenade. Both the town and the nearby camping have nice beach areas. There is a regular bus connection to Pula, however, it should be noted, that buses stop operating at 20:30. For better mobility, rent a-bike service is available at the tourist office at the central square.
    No particular dislikes.
