You can enjoy all this with the option of staying in remote accommodation far from civilization in authentic stone cottages or in beachfront apartments. Korčula, the island of wonderful bays, caves and the Mediterranean-style palaces, is known as the birth place of Marco Polo, the world's greatest traveller, and also as the island with a long shipping tradition and a stone town centre with fortifications and city walls. The traditional knight game Moreška, which takes place in the summer on the day of their patron saint in the town of Korčula, in the commemoration of the battle between Turks and Christians, is still preserved to present day. The island of Mljet, which is one of Croatia’s national parks, is renowned for its beautiful lakes, such as Big Lake and Small Lake. The remains of Roman buildings and a Benedictine monastery, which served as a point of defence along with its tower, were found on the islet of St. Mary in the Big Lake. The vivid vegetation secured Mljet the attribute of the green island that became famous all over the world. The island of Mljet is attractive to all speleology lovers, as it is full of caves and pits, and the most prominent is definitively Ulysses' Cave that can be entered even from the sea. The island of Lastovo, is one of ten paradise gardens in the Mediterranean, it is also on the list of the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF). The island is renowned for its chimneys, and it is as if the island has a connection to the number 46, there are 46 islets surrounding Lastovo, 46 beaches and 46 fields. Surrounded by the sea, full of islets and reefs, the south Dalmatian islands are ideal places for a peaceful holiday.
