This year I as well attended the marathon and it was certainly an event that I will never forget.

It all started early in the morning when guests started arriving to Metković in search of the best place for an undisturbed view to enjoy the start of the marathon. It was a magnificent sight to see more than 450 boatmen in 38 ships of all sizes and shapes lined up on the Neretva river. After the starting signal, the Neretva pirates marked the beginning of this unique spectacle by paddling, bristling the Neretva river.

The marathon which runs from Metkovic to Ploce, a total length of approximately 22 kilometers, was accompanied by more than 20000 curious visitors along the coast. With the crowd singing and cheering on the teams, bells ringing, hand flares flashing and various sirens going on and off, the winners, Komin pirates, were welcomed with a magnificent reception in Ploce.

Every year in August you have the opportunity to be a part of the audience. A competition in which the most important factor is courage and the will to uphold the tradition. Seeing all the boats in one place, hearing the sound of drums and support of the crowd cheering as the boats move toward their goal, feeling the boat rowers desire to win as it gives them the strength to endure the race is an unforgettable experience.
