Motovun is a little town in the central Istria, situated on the top of a 277 metre high hill, which dominates the Mirna river. Leading to the top of the hill and its Venetian town square is the longest Istrian staircase, with 1052 steps. Motovun which is very close to the most frequented Adriatic tourist centres, the Istrian cities of Poreč, Rovinj, Umag, is the favourite excursion destination of tourists from Istrian hotels, but also the centre for congress and cultural tourism - it is the headquarters of the International research centre for late Antiquity and early Middle ages and the International centre of anthropological science. The film festival, which became the component of Croatian cultural offer, is now already traditionally held in Motovun at the end of July while the Motovun forest, which extends for kilometres along the Mirna valley, is the dwelling place of the famed underground mushrooms, truffles that are extracted in this region with the help of specially trained dogs. Summer and early autumn is the period when black truffles come to fruition, whereas the Istrian the most tasteful and precious white truffles are gathered in late autumn and winter.
