Makarska is a town, harbour and tourist centre in the country of Split-Dalmatia. It is one of the most beautiful pearls of Croatian Adriatic and it is in the heart of the Makarska Riviera. Makarska is situated under the foot of the Biokovo Mountain and it consists of the old town core of Mediterranean type and the new part with hotels, restaurants, shops etc. Because of its beauty, good town-planning and natural facilities, yet in the beginning of the 20th century we register the very beginning of what we nowadays call the tourist business. Beside the beautiful, 1500 metres long, beach surrounded by pine wood, Makarska has many sandy or pebble coves. In the harbour, there is a ferry pier to Sumartin on the Brač island. Makarska has also well developed recreation- and healing tourism. This beautiful town offers all conditions for relaxing, but also active vacation, and therefore it is recommended to both, families and younger people.
