Sumartin - island Brac

Tourist destination info Sumartin - island Brac

Sumartin is a small town on the easternmost cape on Brač island. It was founded in 1645 by Dalmatian pilgrims who were trying to escape the Turks and it is interesting that, to this day, residents of Sumartin speak with a different dialect than the rest of the island towns. The main economic branches are fishing, maritime activities, shipbuilding, olive growing and tourism. The town is marked by the Franciscan monastery and church of St. Martin which is a sight to be seen by all history lovers. Because of its port, Sumartin represents the gate to Brač. Beautiful beaches and the crystal clear sea are irresistible to all visitors, while beautiful nature and rich culinary offer are a guarantee of an unforgettable vacation. In the near vicinity of Sumartin you can find several peaceful hidden bays (Rasotica, Zukovik, Radovanja, Studena, Zvirje and Spilice) with sand and pebble beaches where everyone can find a quiet corner for themselves. The town is perfect for a peaceful vacation away from city crowds. As in all Dalmatian towns, Sumartin hosts several summer events, the most popular of which is the Lady of the Angels festivity held on August 2nd. Those who enjoy dalmatian cooking and island specialties can visit restaurants “Bernardo” and “Dalmatino”. While in Sumartin, do not miss the opportunity to visit Bol on the island and Split and Omiš on the mainland.

Must see places

Bol is the oldest town on the coast of Brač. It is rich in long sand and pebble beaches which stretch for 10km. It is home of one of the most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic – Zlatni Rat. Visit some of the town’s historical monuments such as: Roman water collection mechanism, tombstones and stelae, early Christian sarcophagus, pre-Roman church of St. John and Tudor, Baroque Renaissance palace, bishop’s residence, church of Our Lady of Mercy and get acquainted with at least a small piece of the town’s history.

Split is one of the best known and most visited tourist destinations in Croatia and the second largest city in the country.  It is an eternally young city which lives with a slow pace that is very easy to get accustomed to. This city is rich in historical monuments of which we recommend the following: Diocletian’s palace (the heart of the city), the Iron Gate, the statue of bishop Gregory of Nin, the cathedral of St. Duje, church of St. Francis, cathedral of St. Peter, the main court, city basement, St. Anne’s monastery and many others.

Omiš is a small Mediterranean town located at the mouth of the river Cetina. Of its historical characteristics, we emphasize the following: the fortresses Mirabela and Fortica, parish church of St. Michael, Franciscan monastery, churches of St. Peter, Holy Spirit, the Illyrian seminary, old cemetery, medieval town center, pole of shame and the old town lodge. Sports fans can take part in river rafting on the Cetina, free climbing, wind surfing, swimming marathon, beach volleyball and other activities.
