Tourist destination info Senj

Senj - a tourist resort and port in the Velebit channel. The town of Senj is located on the edge of a wooded slope at the foot of the Velebit mountain bare rocks, from which a strong wind called Bura blows in the winter. This region was used to cross from the inland to the coastal area since ancient times. Greek and Roman geographers, as well as historians, mention a port named Senia where Senj stands today. All historical secrets of the town are located in the city museum. History enthusiasts can visit the historic sights of the fortress Nehaj (medieval fortress from the 16th century, a symbol of the town of Senj), the gothic town hall (located on the Mala placa square, featuring the city loggia from 14th century) and Carina palace (dating from the 18th century, it is a rectory in which the bishops archives, a large library and a collection of religious art are located). Visitors to the town of Senj have a fully equipped public beach at their disposal, a Spasovac bay and a few smaller beaches with christal clear water. Be sure to visit the National Park Northern Velebit and the Velebit Nature Park, in order to enjoy the beauty of untouched nature.

During the summer months there are several events, of which we can note the „Senj International Summer Carnival“ as well as the carnival in the wintertime, and also the fishermen's festivities, the “Senj musical summer,” the “Gospa Snježna” holiday and the “Senjski Vitezovi” soccer tournament. Food lovers can enjoy local delicacies in the following restaurants: “Košare,” “Martina,” “Gajeta” and “Stari Grad.” While in Senj, we recommend that you visit Opatija, Rijeka, Slunj and Karlovac.

Must-see places:

Opatija is a destination with the longest tradition of tourism in Croatia. The city’s parks, seaside promenade, tidy swimming areas, fountains and numerous aged villas are the reason that tourists return to Opatija year after year. Visit the following cultural monuments of this city: church of St. Jacob, parish Church of the Annunciation, evangelical church, church of St. Anne, parish church of St. Mark, park Angiolina, park St. Jakob, Lungomare, villa Angiolina and numerous other monuments which stand as evidence of Opatija’s longstanding tradition of tourism.

Rijeka is a port city which is also the center of Primorje-Gorski Kotar county. The symbol of this city is the Morcic – a type of jewelry worn by seafarers to protect them from danger at sea. Visit the many historical monuments which are evidence of the city’s turbulent past: Municipija palace, church of St. Jerome, university library, museum of modern and contemporary art, governor’s palace, maritime and historical museum of the Croatian coast, Rijeka city museum, natural museum, judiciary palace, church of St. Vitus, old gate, Komuna palace, city walls, Adam’s residence, Modello palace, Orthodox church of St. Nicholas, city tower, Jadran palace, church of Kapucin and various others.

Slunj is a city located above the rivers Slunjčica and Korana. It is famous for its natural beauty: Rastoke (corn mill settlement), Slunjčica and its source and Korana. Those who enjoy sports and recreation can take part in fishing, hunting, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, cycling (Slunj – Cetingrad – Slunj) or walking to the center of the town.

Karlovac is located in the heart of Croatia where the lowlands and the mountains meet at the juncture of four rivers (Korana, Kupa, Mrežnica and Dobra). The following are some of the historical characteristics of the city: main city square – Ban Josip Jelačić square – Franciscan monastery, church of the Holy Trinity, city museum, city theatre “Zorin Dom,” musical school, Radoslav Lopašić statue, Vrbanić gardens, benchmark, old city of Dubovac, national promenade of St. Joseph, ethno gallery Žunac, Katzler pavilion, Kamensko Pauline monastery and the church of Our Lady of the Snow.

We have visited Senj twice in two successive years - the only place in the world that we have so done - enough said!
Senj is quiet if you pick the right part to stay in, has some wonderful quiet coves which are excellent for snorkelling and swimming from as long as you know where they are and ice cream to die for. The restaurants are excellent value especially those close to the harbour and best of all we never hear any other UK people and we have stayed for over 4 weeks now. A real unspoilt bit of Croatia.
