The selection of new world nature wonders, “New 7 Wonders” led us to think about the Plitvice lakes during the winter. Each day on the lakes is unique and unrepeatable, but after photos of this icy winter ideal, there is no person who would not want to enjoy these natural marvels at this particular time of year.

A trip to the Plitvice lakes in the middle of winter is a very special and unique experience. The lakes are frozen and forests are covered with snow. The grand waterfall revealed its greatest beauty in a half frozen state, while the lakes followed its uniqueness that shined in daylight. Due to weather conditions, a tour is conducted in smaller groups and only in certain parts of the Plitvice lakes National Park, but the experience of nature is much more intense than is in the summer or spring. Soon, Plitvice plans to offer sport fishing, and restore the famous wedding tradition, which was once popular all over the world.
True nature lovers say that you have not seen Plitvice if you have not visited them in all four seasons, but the lakes in autumn and winter are truly “fabulous”. If you have never before visited Plitvice , after these pictures you just might finally decide to.

Accommodations near the Plitvice lakes National park
Plitvice Lakes Village, Jezerce, Poljanak, Dreznik City, Ostarski Stanovi, Rakovica, Seliste Dreznicko, Grabovac (Rakovica), Rastovaca, Slunj, Rudanovac, Smoljanac, Korenica are located near the National park Plitvice lakes. Here you will find comfortable accommodation and have time to get to know Lika where man is connected to the mountains and sea at the same time. In addition to Plitvice lakes National park, this area offers other natural beauties: Nature Park Paklenica, National Park North Velebit, cave park Grabovaca, Cerovacke cave….

Personally my favorite place is Poljanak, which is only 3 km away from the largest Plitvica lakes waterfall and the falls themselves. It is suitable as a holiday resort for families with small children and for those who are looking for privacy. You can hike in the surrounding woods while listening to the sounds of nearby waterfalls or try your hand at rafting. At the rapids of the Korana you can quench your desire for adventure by canoeing or kayaking, and since this is a mountainous region there are countless opportunities for hiking and free climbing.

For a quiet and relaxing family holiday I would also recommend a place called Jezerce. What is interesting about this place are the two instructive and recreational trails: “Plitvice” and “Cork Cove” trails which provide the possibility of introducing the  biodiversity of the park. The trails are also of recreational character due to their length and shape of the terrain.

The tasteful delicacies of this region are available in the restaurant “Licka kuca” which is located at the entrance to the National Park. The restaurant offers homemade dishes such as smoked ham (prosciutto), roasted lamb,  baked potatoes, trout, sour milk, traditional pastries, etc…
