Split01 The statue of Gregory of Nin - The monuments of Split will tell you the story of this millennium old city. Take a stroll to the impressive statue of Gregory of Nin, touch his big toe and make a wish. Made by the famous sculptor Ivan Meštrović, it is located just outside of the Golden Gate - the northern entrance into Diocletian’s palace. Gregory of Nin is an important figure in the history of Croatia, as it was he who insisted that mass be held in the Croatian language.

Built by the Roman emperor Diocletian in the years 295 – 305; where after time the town of Split developed inside and out of the walls of the palace. Part of the Palace is the Cathedral St. Dujam, who is also the patron saint of Split. The cathedral was built on the foundations of Emperor's mausoleum.
Split03 Marjan Park - One of our top suggestions would also have to be Marjan Park, one of the favourite picnic and outing spots of the people of Split for walking, strolling, light jogging or just enjoying the fresh air. The park spreads over 168 hectares of pine forest, where from the lookout point you can see a beautiful view of Split and the surrounding islands. Because of the fresh air and comfortable temperatures, the people of Split call Marjan “the city lungs”.

About Split

The city of Split developed from and around the palace of the emperor Diocletian 1700 years ago. The palace was completed in the fourth century, and was built as a palace for the emperor to stay in during the summer and later for the remaining years of his life. Diocletian's palace is the only ancient palace that is still inhabited today.

Although the old core and palace complex are protected by UNESCO, Split is still full of modern life. Taverns, cafés, bars and boutiques are spread out through the stairs and streets, and incorporated into the stone houses. The centre of the palace is the Peristyle square, which was made of Egyptian granite, and a sphinx that the builder of the palace had brought from Egypt to guard the mausoleum where the emperor Diocletian was later buried. Beneath the palace is a combination of underground rooms where you can find souvenirs that will always remind you of your visit to Split.

Not too far from Split, you can find many opportunities for day trips, such as the picturesque town of Trogir, Kastela, Solin where you can find the remains of the ancient town of Salona. Going south the town of Omiš is located on the estuary of the river Cetina.
