Istria - INFO

Istria, the largest Croatian peninsula, boasts some of the nicest coastal towns: such as Umag, Poreč, Rovinj, Medulin and many other small coastal destinations. The interior, or the so called Green Istria, will greet you with a rich agritourist offer and its intact nature.
The city of Poreč is ideal for an active holiday with over 70 types of sports on sea and the land. Medulin is a small town and a frequent destination of young people and all fans of good entertainment, live music and dance. Umag is well known for the organisation of tennis manifestations and an ATP tournament. The Rovinj peninsula and the nearby Red Island offers visitors organised trips to its wonderful bays and beaches. In Rabac you can find splendid pebble beaches for playing, bathing or just relaxing. Istria and the interior with its small towns and villages are often praised for its extraordinary nature, authentic cuisine and a fine agrotourist offer. Motovun is a small town in the interior with a green landscape, wine routes and a film festival. Buzet is an authentic Istrian town that has been inhabited since prehistoric times and it is often called the capital of truffles.
3000-year-old Pula boasts exquisite cultural and historic treasures. If you visit Pula, you must not miss the Arena, an old Roman amphitheatre which had been the setting for gladiator games.

Did you know
that the smallest town in the world is situated in Istria? It is called Hum and has only 23 inhabitants.

Sights

- The Arena of Pula – This is the best preserved Roman amphitheatre. It had been a setting for gladiator games in Roman times. Nowadays, it hosts various events, concerts and the Pula film festival. It can hold up to 23000 spectators.
- The Sergijevci Arch – The Arch was erected between 29 and 27 BC by the Sergijevci family in honour of three family members who had been high officials in Pula.
- Eufrasius' Basilica in Poreč – A uniquely famous example of early Christian architecture whose construction was initiated by the bishop Eufrasius in the 4th century A.D. The basilica is one of UNESCO's World Heritage sites.
- The Ethnographic Museum of Istria in Pazin – It is situated in the Pazin fortress, Kastel and, among other exhibits; it displays the bells of Istrian churches from the 14th century onwards.
- The church of St. Eufemia in Rovinj
- Brijuni National park – The Brijuni archipelago has been inhabited since the ancient times. It was once a summer resort for wealthy Roman citizens, hence the remains of the Roman Villa Rustica, a splendid set of buildings. In more recent time, the Brijuni was the favourite holiday resort of the ex-Yugoslav statesman Tito who hosted statespeople and celebrities from all over the world in his Brijuni villa.
- The Rabac beaches – white pebble beaches with lush Mediterranean flora and crystal clear sea
- The Lim Fiord near Rovinj – The fiord will leave breathless even those who think they have seen it all.

Gastronomy

- Truffles – These hidden underground tubers can only be found by specially trained dogs. Although their alleged aphrodisiac powers have not been proven, they are held in high esteem in international haute cuisine.
