Travel is an opportunity to relax, enjoy new experiences, and discover the places we visit. But even while on holiday, our behaviour leaves an impact. With a few simple habits, we can help protect nature, reduce unnecessary consumption, and show respect for the local community.
Responsible travel does not mean giving up enjoyment. Quite the opposite. It means enjoying a destination in a way that helps keep it just as beautiful for the guests who come after us.
Code of Conduct for Responsible Guests
1. Save water
Especially during the summer months, water is a precious resource. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, take shorter showers, and replace towels only when necessary.
2. Use air conditioning responsibly
When the air conditioning is on, keep windows and doors closed. When leaving the apartment, turn it off or adjust the temperature so energy is not wasted unnecessarily.
3. Turn off lights and appliances
Before leaving your accommodation, check that the lights, television, and other electrical devices you are not using are switched off.
4. Separate waste whenever possible
Use designated bins for paper, plastic, glass, and other waste according to local rules. A small habit adopted by every guest can make a big difference.
5. Avoid single-use plastics
Bring a reusable water bottle, a fabric shopping bag, and your own cup or container whenever practical.
6. Protect beaches and nature
Do not leave rubbish behind, and do not remove plants, shells, or other natural items from protected areas. Whatever you bring with you, take it back with you.
7. Choose more sustainable ways to get around
When distances allow, walk, cycle, or use public transport. Besides reducing your environmental impact, you may also discover parts of the destination you would otherwise miss by car.
8. Support local businesses
Shop from local producers, visit family-run restaurants, markets, and small shops. This helps ensure that part of the value of your trip stays within the community you are visiting.
9. Respect the peace and daily life of local residents
The destination where you are spending your holiday is someone’s home. Respect house rules, quiet hours, neighbours, and shared spaces.
10. Leave the place as you would like to find it
A simple rule that applies to your apartment, the beach, parks, picnic areas, and the destination as a whole.
Small Actions, Big Impact
We do not have to be perfect travelers to be responsible travelers. It is enough to become more aware of a few everyday habits and think about how our behaviour affects the place where we are staying.
Travel, explore, and enjoy – but leave behind only beautiful memories.
