If you are planning a trip to Croatia, then be sure to visit the cities where the epic fantasy drama based on the bestselling fantasy book series by George R.R. Martin, “Game of Thrones” was filmed.
An epic story of treachery and nobility, where summers and winters can last years, and only the lust for power is eternal. All fans of the HBO series are celebrating as the filming of season 4 began this summer in CROATIA! Filming of the 4th season, “A Storm of Storms part II,” took place in the cities of Dubrovnik and Split.
Dubrovnik
The seaside city of Dubrovnik, the „Pearl of the Adriatic“, and a major tourist destination in Croatia, has been a stand-in for many filming locations in the series, including King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.

The directors say that it was amazing to find a full-on, immaculately preserved, medieval-walled city that looks like King’s Landing, where the majority of our show is set. The scenes were filmed in the Dubrovnik old town walls and the St. Lawrence (Lovrijenac) Fortress.
See what te producers said when they discovered Dubrovnik as the best filming set for season 2.
Split
This year filming also took place in the city of Split, a coastal city, located on the Adriatic Sea and home to the palace of Emperor Diocletian, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
A few episodes were shot in Diocletian’s Palace’s basement.
Other parts of the series were filmed in the medieval fortress Klis which dates back to Roman times and provides a panoramic view of the city of Split and the Adriatic sea.
The last season of Game Of Thrones left Emilia Clarke in the role of Daenerys Stormborn, Mother of Dragons on the verge of reclaiming her throne with her three dragons and her Unsullied army. The fortress of Klis is where she filmed a part of the series as she prepared to launch the battle to reclaim the kingdom that is rightfully hers and was stolen from her when she was a child.
A few scenes will also be filmed in the a deserted quarry in Žrnovnica, some 10 km from Split. The last location will be Baška Voda on the Makarska riviera.
My son had the pleasure of being an extra during the filming in Split alongside Emilia Clarke. He said that is was a pleasure meeting her, that not only is she beautiful and professional, but also very caring, outgoing and fun. Being a part of the filming was a dream come true for him, an experience he will carry with him for years to come. Our family is now more eager than ever to watch season 4.
The “Game of Thrones” season 4 will reportedly premier in Spring 2014. Fans, who were shocked by the “Red Wedding” from Season 3, be prepared as there is another big wedding coming up in the next season. Will keep you posted.
