What to visit

Rijeka01 Korzo - Rijeka - While strolling through Rijeka, be sure to visit  Korzo - the favourite meeting place and promenade of the people of Rijeka. Here the rhythm and spirit of the town can be felt by all visitors. Korzo is a place where friends meet, to have a coffee or just enjoy the nice day.

Rijeka02 The City Museum of Rijeka - The City Museum of Rijeka is also one of our top suggestions, as many exhibits are organised in the museum that are dedicated to the past and present of the city. It is one of the best ways to learn about the city, especially since the museums have 11 collections.

Rijeka03 The Croatian National Theatre Sir Ivan Zajc - Rijeka - Be sure to visit The Croatian National Theatre Sir Ivan Zajc, which was built in 1885. This building is viewed as a connection to other central European cities, as the same structure can be found in almost all other cities in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy such as Zagreb, Vienna and Prague.
Opatija01 St. Jacob's Park - Opatija - As part of your tour through Opatija remember to visit St. Jacob’s church, with its monastery and cloister which has a well in the middle. The church was built on the foundation of a Benedictine monastery that once stood there, which is first mentioned in history in the year 1439. The bell tower was built between the church and monastery and is made of stone. The park is also a horticultural monument covering over 3.64 hectares, including over 160 plant species, such as magnolias that arrived from places such as China, Japan and Australia, which were brought by sailors.
Opatija02 Girl with seagull - Girl with seagull is a frequent motif for posters and postcards that portray Opatija, while the statue has become one of the symbols of Opatija. Erected in 1956, is a piece by the artist Zvonko Car; located on the Lungomare promenade, fits in perfectly with the ambient of the promeade.

Opatija03 Lungomare Promenade - Opatija - The Lugomare promenade came into existance over a long period of time. Today it is one of the most beautiful promenades on the Adriatic coast extending over 11 km long. While walking on the Lungomare you can experience what attracted the royal families to Opatija.

About Rijeka and Opatija

Did you know that the Morčić (a figurine of a black man in a turban) is the symbol of Rijeka? It was part of the jewellery that sailors used to wear, as a sign of protection from weary waters; the archduchess Ana Maria also brought one to the royal courts in Vienna. Perhaps the Morčić will be the centre of your Rijeka story, or the Močić will be the souvenir you choose to bring home with you? Rijeka is a port city, although it is not a totally industrialised city, the maritime charm can still be found hidden in the streets.

Not far from Rijeka, is the town of Opatija - known as the Croatian Nice. It is in Opatija that the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy built their lush villas and spent their winters there due to the mild Mediterranean climate. Today one can still feel the presence of the Austo-Hungarian monarch in the architecture of the villas in Opatija. Today the villas have been converted into hotels all along the famous Lungomare promenade in Opatija; the promeade extends 11km along the coast. Cultivated and landscaped parks all along the promenade show numerous types of indigenous plant life. With a light stroll on the Lungomare you will experience the past and present of the Croatian Nice.
