Opatija riviera - INFO

The Opatija Riviera is 43 km long and it is filled with marvellous nature, parks, promenades, old Austro-Hungarian villas and beaches. Austro-Hungarian aristocracy built spacious villas in the 19th century and spent their winters here due to the extremely mild local Mediterranean climate.
The heritage of the aristocratic life style from the times of the Empress Sissy still permeates the building styles of Opatijan villas. Those villas are now hotels near Lungo Mare, the famous 12 kilometre long promenade in Opatija by the sea.
Groomed parks with charming specimens of autochthonous flora cover large areas of the town. If you take a pleasant stroll through the parks you will experience the history and the present of this picturesque place. Be sure to visit the nautical centre in Ičići, the tourist destination Lovran, Moščenička Draga will thrill you with its 2km long pebble beach. For nature and quiet lovers, the town of Medveja is the ideal place for you!

Sights

- The Church of St Jacob – The church incorporates parts of an even older church from 1509.
- Villa Angiolina – The famous villa dates from 1884. It is one of numerous other villas from the Austro-Hungarian period.
- Opatija's parks – Most of the parks were founded owing to numerous sea captains who brought plant from all parts of the world.
- Lungo Mare – 12 kilometre long promenade near the sea and old Austrian villas.
- Mount Učka Natural Park – Recreational opportunities ranging from easy walks to alpinism and skydiving
- Lovran – A typical Kvarner town with narrow paved streets, attached houses, stairs and typical small coastal windows – poneštras. The city is surrounded by defensive walls with three entrances.

Gastronomy

- Lovran chestnuts (maruni) – Marunada, a chestnut festivity, takes place every autumn in Lovran. You can try different chestnut specialties: baked chestnuts, crèmes and cakes made from chestnuts.
- Lovran Bamboo (bambus) – White wine with Fanta
- Sweets – Chestnut cakes made by old recipes, fritule and other sweets that you can enjoy in Opatija cafes and pastry shops.
- Asparagus-picking and asparagus specialties in the spring, with the asparagus festival in Lovran
- Seafood specialties with pasta
- Truffles, Istria – These hidden underground tubers can only be found by specially trained dogs. Although their alleged aphrodisiac powers have not been proven, they are held in high esteem in international haute cuisine.

- The Brijuni National Park – The Brijuni archipelago is the extraordinary combination of natural beauties and cultural and historical heritage that carefully preserves remains of five thousand years of human activity
- Plitvice Lakes National Park – This natural phenomenon consists of 16 terraced lakes connected by spectacular waterfalls, and is included in the UNESCO's Register of World Heritage.
- Venice, Italy
- Postojna Cave, Slovenia – This is the largest and the most spectacular cave in Europe.
- Lipica, Slovenia – Lipica has been the cradle of Lipizzaner horses that have been bred here for more than 400 years.

Fun & Nightlife

The Opatija Riviera will offer you a wide spectrum of entertainment for all generations. There is a great number of beachfront night bars. You can spend a quiet evening in one of the exclusive restaurants with offer rich seafood specialties. Several of the most famous restaurants are situated in the Opatija Marina or in Volosko, a small place with a long fishing tradition. Make sure to visit Kastav, a small town near Opatija which offers a wonderful view on the Kvarner bay. Be sure to visit Kukuriku, a well-know slow food restaurant. Try the delicious dishes made from game, horse meat or some of the vegetarian specialties. In the town you will find traditional Opatija cafes, the Hemingway cocktail bar or La Havana Club. If you want to try out your luck, be sure to visit Opatija and Domino casino clubs.
