Starigrad Paklenica

Tourist destination info Starigrad Paklenica

Starigrad Paklenica is a village and a small port on the coast of the Velebit channel. The town is built on the foundations of the ancient city Argiyruntuma. It is also a starting point for the national park Paklenica. Starigrad is where the mountains and the sea become one and is therefore interesting to swimmers as well as hikers. Miles of sandy beaches make it suitable for families with children, while mountain Velebit and NP Paklenica are regularly visited by cavers and lovers of hiking and free climbing. Besides hiking, free climbing and recreational sports, enthusiasts can also enjoy caving, kayaking and canoeing as well as rafting on the river Zrmanja. Visitors have at their disposal a number of tennis courts, sports fields and various equipment for water sports. Walkers and collectors of herbs can take wonderful walks on the slopes of the national park. The old part of town is rich in archaeological finds and architectural monuments such as the famous Villa Petar Hektorović.

In the summertime, the town of Starigrad Paklenica holds several „Fishermen’s Evenings,“ evenings of celebration which are held in almost all Dalmatian towns. Fish, wine, olive oil, bread and live music combine to create an enjoyable evening for everyone. Hotels also have their own evening festivities which include live music, as well as various local specialties (fish, lamb, prosciutto and various cheeses). There are also various restaurants in this small town which offer local specialties, of which we recommend the following: '4 Ferala', 'Ante', 'Miramar' and 'Bava.' For those who prefer a more modern type of entertainment, we recommend visits to Zadar, Šibenik and Nin.

Must- see places:

Zadar is a city with an extraordinary history and extremely valuable cultural heritage. It is located in the very heart of the Adriatic and is an abundant source of archaeological and monumental treasure from all periods. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. It is most known for the following historical monuments: St. Donat church, Cathedral of St. Stošije, St. Šime church, St. Mary’s church and monastery, St. Frane church and monastery, city walls, fortresses and gates, St. Krševan church, Grisogono-Vovo palace, Duke’s and Prior’s palaces. Apart from these historical landmarks, the city is well known for the following attractions: sea organ, solar circle, national square, Five Wells Square, the city’s silver and gold, Forum, Ancient Glass Museum and Kalelarga.

Šibenik is a city located at the mouth of the river Krka. It is famous for its various historical landmarks such as the fortresses of St. Mihovil, St. Nikola, St. Ivan and Šibičevac, the Cathedral of St. Jakov, St. Frane church, St. Dominic’s church and the Four Wells. If you would like to further explore the history of the city, we recommend visiting its museums and galleries. Apart from its historical characteristics, Šibenik is well known for its summertime festivities. Šibenik is home to the International Children’s Festival, Šibenik Evening, Evenings of Dalmatian Chansons, Organ Summer School and Šibenik Cultural Summer.

Nin is a small town in Zadar County with only 1500 inhabitants. The center of this ancient town is a small island (diameter of 500km) which is connected to the mainland with two bridges. It is famous for its turbulent history which is evident from its historical landmarks: St. Križ church (“smallest cathedral in the world”), St. Jacob’s church, St. Anselmo Cathedral, remains of the largest Roman temple on the Eastern coast of the Adriatic, Duke Branimir’s statue, Lower town gates and access bridge, royal square with well, statue of bishop Gregory of Nin and the coronation church of St. Nicholas.
