Postira - island Brac

Tourist destination info Postira - island Brac

Postira is a fishing and a tourist town located on the north side of the island of Brac, rich with attractive sandy and pebble coves. A favorable location has transformed Postira in a harbor and a fishing place, while the fertile land in the hinterland ensures homemade food and quality wines. It is first mentioned in the 14th century. The name of the place comes from the word “Pastura” which means “pasture” in Latin. The place is known for its cultural monuments and numerous findings which testify about the turbulent past of this place. Visit the Lazaric castle, the parish church of St. John the Baptist (built in the middle of the 16th century), Mirje locality (where an early Christian convent was found, along with the cloister dedicated to St. Stjepan), remains of the early Christian aisled church, remains of a former roman complex with ancient dock remains in the sea). The place is rich with already mentioned attractive sandy and pebble beaches and coves. The most famous and beautiful are the coves Lovrecin (sandy beach), mala Lozna (pebble beach), Prvlja (sandy beach), Zastivanje (pebble beach) and Rat (pebble beach). Sports and active vacation enthusiasts can practice cycling, beach volleyball, handball, basketball, football, tennis, bowling, walking, swimming, diving and many other water sports. Like any other Dalmatian place,  Postira organizes numerous festivities and manifestations during summer. The traditional cultural fun manifestation “Postira summer” offers and authentic experience of the local festivities. If you are willing to savor the delicacies and specialties of this island, visit the restaurants in Postira, such as “Brazza”, “Lipa” and “Lovrecina”.

Be sure to visit:

Split is one of the best known and most visited tourist destinations on the Adriatic and the second largest city in the country.  It is an eternally young city which lives with a slow pace that is very easy to get accustomed to. This city is rich in historical monuments of which we recommend the following: Diocletian’s palace (the heart of the city), the Iron Gate, the statue of bishop Gregory of Nin, the cathedral of St. Duje, church of St. Francis, cathedral of St. Peter, the main court, city basement, St. Anne’s monastery and many others.

Hvar is an ancient city with a rich history and the greatest number of sunny days. It faces the sunny South side of the world on the island of the same name. Its name comes from the Greek name for Hvar, “Pharos.” In the city you can view various historical monuments of which we recommend the Fortica fortress, the Hvar cathedral, city theatre and the Franciscan monastery. This city is the center of the island’s tourism and it is one of the most preferred and most visited destinations on the entire Adriatic. Its most attractive characteristics are a warm, sunny climate, various accommodation offerings, sports and recreation, natural beauty, good culinary offer and an active night life.

Bol is the oldest town on the coast of Brac. It is rich with long pebbly and sandy beaches which stretch for about 10km. One of the most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic is located in Bol – Zlatni rat. Historical sites enthusiasts can visit the roman aqueduct, tombstones and reliefs, old Christian sarcophagus, preromantic church of St. Ivan and Tudor, renaissance baroque palace, bishop residency and the church of Our Lady of Grace.

Makarska is one of the most famous tourist destinations on the Croatian coast. The city is full of tourist activities and everyone is sure to find something to their liking. Makarska has several historical monuments such as the Franciscan monestary (which includes a Pinacotheca, a library, a Malacological museum, and the “Planina i More” institute) the church of St. Mark, church of St. Peter, city museum and the church of St. Philip.

      Small and perfectly formed
Postira was one of many beautiful little coastal villages on Brac, but for us it was the best. Small, quiet, family-friendly, not a great deal of night life other than superb bars and restaurants, it offered us a really relaxing holiday in a beautiful environment. I loved the winding streets leading into the small town centre, there are plenty of old, traditional Croatian houses to admire on the way. Between the houses you just catch a glimpse of the blue, blue sea and the rocks which provide the perfect bathing, diving and sunning platforms. It doesn''t get much better than this.
