National Park North Velebit is the youngest of the National parks in Croatia, was founded in 1999. The area was declared as a national park because of its distinct variety of karsts phenomena, rich wild and plant life, and the extraordinary natural beauties in such a small area. Alpinists in Croatia consider North Velebit the jewel among Croatian mountains. The farther distance from the main roads leading up to the park roads cause a reduced number of visitors, which only greatens the mysteriousness and the natural ambient of this area.

The area of the park is 109 km2, inside of which there is strict reservation Hajdučki and Rozanski kukovi. The mountains represent a specific geomorphologic phenomenon, discovered in the mountains were more than 150 caves, the most renowned is Luka’s cave, is one of the deepest in the world ever, and was only discovered in 1999.

Many hiking trails go through the park, the most well-known is Premužić’s trail, that winds through the most beautiful and interesting parts of North Velebit. Once the peak of the mountain is reached, a breathtaking view of the Adriatic Sea and islands can be seen. There have been many settlements in the past in the area; old field houses in ruins can still be seen.

On the coastal side of Velebit lies the bay of Zavratnica, a beautiful detail of the coast underlying Velebit. The bay of Zavratnica was declared a geomorphologic monument of nature, which can best be seen in the winter months where there is a distinct fixture of light and shadows.

The most frequented pass to the park is from the direction Otočac (Otočac-Rijeka: 103km, Otočac-Zadar: 137km). You can also access the park via hiking trails from the coastal side of Velebit, from the direction of Frisnica and Gornje (upper) Klada, and also from the northeast side via Krasna.
